I had the pleasure to attend the Biohacker Summit in Stockholm last month. Biohacking may not be a concept familiar to you, so I’ve come up with a definition:

Biohacking is the application of science, technology and/or engineering to manipulate biology to achieve an enhanced state of being

The aim of this blog is to achieve enhanced states of productivity, primarily through nutrition. So definitely biohacking going on here. In fact, everyone with the ability to think and make choices for themselves is a biohacker to an extent. Trying to get a good nights sleep, exercising or taking medicines or supplements are all forms of biohacking.

So with biohacking explained, let’s get back to the overview of the summit (part 1) and my top take aways (part 2).

Upgraded dinner

VIP guests, summit speakers and exhibitors were hosted for dinner by the organisers at a restaurant on the outskirts of Stockholm on the eve of the summit. Yet, this was no ordinary dinner. The 40 odd guests had to prep and cook a 7 course-meal dinner themselves, from a diverse range of nutrient dense ingredients. Some of these ingredients had to be foraged for and aren’t the type of thing you could find in Tesco:

  • Seaweed
  • Wild weeds and herbs
  • Halibut
  • Organic chocolate
  • Chaga mushroom tea
  • Various supplements and additives that stimulated a high state of sociability (all legal of course)!

The meal was insanely flavourful and a lot of fun to make. The additives had a marked effect on energy, focus and sociability on the diners. Several reported feeling tingling and an energy in the area behind their forehead (the location of the pre-frontal cortex). The discussion around the dinner table was fascinating:

  • why you should forage for food in the locations of your ancestry (hint: because your genes evolved with the flora that grew there)
  • recommended supplementation based on research carried out by the Russian army
  • the hormetic effect (strengthening through stressors) of different nutrients on health
  • studies on the potency of olive oil on longevity
  • developments in human augmentation from Silicon Valley

It was a privilege to dine with a hardcore of innovative biohackers.

Biohacker Summit

Conference guests had the opportunity to attend talks or wander around the exhibition hall. The talks included the following (with my favorites bolded):
